Canon: Baldur's Gate 3

Age: 239+, looks to be in his late 30s, which is how he'll always look.
Character History: Here!

Personality:
In a nutshell: Soaking wet purebred cat kicked one too many times who has finally escaped and decided to make it everyone else's problem.

Astarion comes across, deliberately, as charming and witty. He has something of a silver tongue and is inclined to banter and flirt, to try to woo his way into people's good graces. There's an air of nobility about him, not in the moral sense of the word noble but in the sense that he has a taste for fine things and is used to getting his way. He plays at ego and vanity, not at all shy about using his looks to his advantage. He's snarky and sarcastic and has a fairly sharp sense of humor, usually aimed at others.

This, however, is all cover and bluster. Astarion relies on charm and deception as tools to accomplish his goals. He's manipulative and has a definite cruel streak when it comes to the troubles and problems of others. When a number of his traveling companions seem to have the tendency to helping people and heroic acts, Astarion's motivations and preferences lie with dealing with the things that impact him the greatest. Deep down, and really not all that deep, he is confused and terrified.

Astarion initially decides to try to seduce Tav to ensure that the de facto leader of their little group of Tadpole-bonded souls is fond of him and will protect him. But actually forming real connections, developing real feelings, that is all foreign and new to him, confusing and intimidating. He also has a very odd relationship with sex, using it to his advantage, but sometimes resenting the fact that he has done this so many times as ordered by his master and can still do it so easily, sometimes hating himself for it, other times pursuing it nevertheless. Sex with feelings is far more complicated and he doesn't know how to do it. At all. And that has so much to do with his life under Cazador.

For the past 200 years, Astarion has been a Vampire spawn, a slave in the magical control of Cazador, the vampire who turned him into what he is. He's endured mental and physical torture, the marks of which he bears in a ritual circle of runic writing on his back. Now that he is finally in possession of his free will once more, he is viciously defensive over it. He also does not know entirely what to do with it, or even who he is anymore. The man he was has been dead for centuries, and he's been little more than a plaything for his vampiric master, used as a lure to draw in other victims for his sire. He is still figuring out who he is, and this is something that can be seen as he begins to develop relationships with Tav and the rest of the party, growing fond and even protective of them. He is also fiercely in favor of freedom and loathes those who would make slaves of others or persecute "monsters" simply for what they are.

There's also a lingering fury and rage in the vampire, a desire for revenge against his master. He is also not one to dismiss the potential for power out of hand, and is one of the more vocal about exploring the abilities the Tadpoles have given them.

Over all, Astarion is a hurt thing who hurts things, though he has shown some potential for self reflection (haha) and growth on this point. He's self-serving and wraps his paranoia and fear in a layer of polished charm and wit.

Powers/Abilities:

- Vampire: Astarion is a vampire spawn. As such he does not age and must drink blood to sustain himself. Normally he would also be unable to be in the sunlight without turning to ashes, would not be able to enter homes without invitation and would be under the mind control of the vampire who made him. Thanks to the Illithid Tadpole in his head though, something in his biology seems to have been changed so that these characteristics no longer hold true. He still, however, has no reflection in mirrors, is cool to the touch and wears frilly shirts, as all vampires do. I presume his biological existence as a vampire (as altered by the tadpole) and these traits will remain as they're not powers so much as just his current biology and lot in life.

- Tadpole Powers: Because of the Mindflyaer Tadpole in his head, he and the others similarly afflicted are able to look into each other's minds and share thoughts and memories. They are also able to use the Tadpole to sway the will of others around them to a degree. (Power to be nerfed until regained)

- Elf: Astarion can cast the cantrip firebolt because he's a high elf. (Power to be nerfed until regained)

- Rogue: Astarion is a rogue which means he's good at sneaky, shifty, shady things. Sneaking, lock picking, pick-pocketing (and other sleight of hand skills), lying, acrobatics, performance, persuasion, stabbing people. He's proficient with several weapons including daggers, long swords, rapiers, short swords and hand crossbows. None of these are magic he's just a shady dick.

- Magistrate: Apparently he used to be a magistrate so idk knowledge of extremely antiquated laws considering that was two centuries ago and he has taken no continuing education courses since.
